Austin Cold Hardy Cacti

From the wilted plants, tattered lawns, and fallen limbs of the Texas Winter storms of 2021 and 2023 comes Austin Cold Hardy Cacti: a backyard plant nursery dedicated to Texas native (and near-native) varieties of COLD HARDY cacti and succulents. Focusing on native cold hardy varieties for the landscape that increase diversity while planning for the unpredictable weather patterns of global warming. Plants will be sold in person, at Austin-area pop-up markets, or by appointment beginning Fall of 2026. Sorry, it takes a while to grow real plants. In the meantime, request to join my email list to be alerted about future sales and events. For wholesale inquiries or appointments please email me at jacob@austincoldhardycacti.com.

I'm also on Instagram @austincoldhardycacti -- of course.

What does "cold hardy" mean?

Cold-Hardy

Plants capable of surviving freezing temperatures, including snow and ice, sometimes withstanding temperatures well below 0˚ F. Routine covering of plants is unnecessary.

Cold and Wet

Cacti have evolved to thrive in hot and dry conditions, typically with rain totals of less then 30" per year. Climates that are cold AND wet are a challenge, with clay soils exacerbating the problem.

The Right Plants

Choosing cacti from central Texas that can tolerate cold and wet conditions or using containers or mounds of well-draining sandy soil will greatly improve your success.
